Mount Kilimanjaro

Mount Meru

KILIMANJARO: Reaching an altitude of 5,895m, Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa. There are, higher peaks on other continents, but Kilimanjaro is effectively the world´s largest single mountain, a free- standing entity rising an incredible 5km above the surrounding plains, and on rare occasions when it is not veiled in clouds, the mountain´s distinctive silhouette and snow capped peaks are one of the most breathtaking sights on the continent.
Kilimanjaro is also the highest mountain anywhere that can be ascended by somebody without specialized mountaineering expierence or equipment. Iin geological terms, the mountain is a relatively young, like most other large mountains near the Rift Valley, first formed through volcanic activity erupting about one million years ago.

MOUNT MERU: At 4,566m, Mount Meru is regarded as a dormant volcano since lava flowed from it as recently as 100 years ago. Though low-key by comparison to nearby Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru is regarded by many perhaps the most rewarding mountain to climb in East Africa. Meru is just as interesting as Kilimanjaro from the biological point of view and, because comparatively few people climb it, you are more likely to see forest animals. Mount Meru is the product of the same volcanic activity that formed the Great Rift Valley 15 to 20 million years ago, and it attained a height similar to that of Kilimanjaro until a massive eruption tore out its eastern wall 250,000 years ago. The Arusha and Meru people deify Mount Meru as a rain god. It is unlikely that any local person actually climbed to the 4566m peak prior to Fritz Jaeger´s pioneering ascent in 1904.

OUR LODGE: The Meru Mbega Lodge set up on a large garden compound bordering the Arusha National Park with great views of Mount Meru and Mount Kilimanjaro. The lodge comprises of eight spacious double/ triple rooms and four, two bedroom suites/ family suites.
